So, I need a new chain on my lovely VFR, does anyone have a chain riveter that I could borrow or does anyone fancy riveting a chain for me for a brew and a rideout?

I'm Liverpool based if you are interested!!

There are at least 3 ways to do this

1. the yorkshire tight b@stard way

Use 2 hammers, put a heavy one behind the link, then peen over the other end with a smaller hammer just enough to ensure the sideplate stays on (be carefull not to 'trap' the link too tight)

2. the normal way

stop cadging and ferkin buy one!!!

3. the 'scouser' way

procure one

good luck

The Scouser way hasn't been so successful for me as yet (There again it never has been)

Any recommendations on which rivet tool to purchase?

Cold riveting is best done on an anvil/back of a vice. With a 2lb engineers ball hammer. simples.

Or, buy the chain from a shop that will fit it for a small fee.

I go with this method as I quite like my foot to remain attached to my ankle

.....or you could just buy a proper bike without a chain

The only two places in the world that still have an anvil is Consett (ie yours) and Beamish Museum...who borrow yours during the week to show to the OAP coach trips!

This turned into a bloody Saga. I'm on day 2 of changing the sprockets and chain! (It did involve a trip into Liverpool to pick up replacement fairing parts though, tools are in Garstang)

I had to remove most of the plastics as the bloody trim clips had all had their heads worn (the cross head clips), Now I'm re-assembling the bike using cable ties in place of some of the trim clips (Until I can get replacements)
